AS 4736 and OK compost INDUSTRIAL certify breakdown in a commercial composting facility. Those facilities use controlled heat, moisture and processing conditions that most homes cannot reproduce.
Home compostable
AS 5810 and OK compost HOME are the standards most relevant when customers expect a product to break down in a home compost environment. They are harder claims to make, and they should be backed by clear certification.
What a retailer should ask
Ask which standard applies, whether the certificate covers the actual bag material, and whether the claim on the packaging is precise. "Compostable" without the standard behind it leaves too much room for misunderstanding.
